Toronto Restaurant Discriminated Against Woman Who Uses Mobility Aids, Tribunal Rules

In a decision issued this week, the tribunal says Haily ButlerHenderson “experienced adverse treatment” when she was repeatedly refused access to a downstairs washroom at the Pentagram Bar and Grill on Aug. 19, 2016.

Group Homes Need to Rethink Visiting Rules During COVID-19

People with intellectual disabilities and their elderly parents are silently falling victim to COVID-19 in Peel and throughout Ontario. It is not the virus, but rather inequitable policies adopted by agencies operating group homes backed by ill-informed provincial guidelines. Families are afraid to speak up, fearing reprisal.

What are the Ford Government’s Plans for Ensuring that One Third of a Million Students with Disabilities are Fully and Safely Included During School Re-Opening Next Month?

The Ford Government has received excellent advice on what it needs to do. We are still waiting for it to unveil a comprehensive plan of action, so that 72 school boards are not left to flounder, reinventing the wheel, with the serious risk that they may get it wrong. The Ford Government has had five months to plan for this issue.

The Council of Canadians with Disabilities Supports Quebecer, Jonathan Marchand, as he brings his cage in front of the National Assembly in Quebec to obtain his and his friends’ release from long-term care facilities

Marchand, who uses a ventilator, has escaped from his long-term care facility (CHSLD) and is camping out in the public space in front of Quebecs National Assembly. He is requesting an in-person meeting with Premier Francois Legault in order to discuss his proposal for providing community-based personal care supports for people with disabilities so that they can live dignified and fulfilling lives in the community instead of being warehoused in long-term care facilities.

Accessibility Compliance Not Being Enforced Says City Councillor

Construction in Winnipeg can be a nuisance for many, but for people with mobility restrictions, it’s more than just inconvenient.

As the city works to repair roads and sidewalks, some have noticed it appears accessibility compliance rules aren’t being followed.
